It is typically managed by a peer-to-peer network for use as a publicly distributed ledger.

History

The first blockchain-like protocol was proposed in 1982 by David Chaum.

In 2008, a person or a group of people has conceptualized the first decentralized blockchain: Bitcoin.

In 2015, Vitalik Buterin & Gavin Wood has released Ethereum, the first blockchain with smart contract functionality.
